The aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of various forms of prose, poetry and drama, as well as introducing students to the notion and practice of text analysis. Students will become familiar with terminology and the historical development of English literature. We shall also become dab hands using the tools to interpret and analyze texts (particularly poetry). Students will also be given a forum in which to develop their presentation skills, as each student will present a 15min Powerpoint on a poem of their choice. Please be aware that I may on occasion use the 15 min gap from 18:30 to 18:45, so as to accommodate technical issues, presentations and workshops...There will be regular revision/checks and fortnightly tests throughout the course. Good preperation and participation will be monitored and will affect grading. Students must pass the fortnightly tests with (60%+). There will also be a short introduction to the Chicago Citation style, which is the standard citing style at the Dept. of English. There will be no final paper.....Be it face to face or online, attendance at the first session (5th March 5pm, Room: N.0.27), is compulsory, as the basics of the course will be presented, and important administrational “stuff” can be discussed.
