After this course students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of and/or show familiarity withthe history of the English language, with special focus on medieval and early modern English;the processes relevant to language development and change; and earlier varieties of English.With this knowledge students will develop their own critical views on the relationship between socio-historical and linguistic development.

Inhalt/e
This lecture covers the linguistic history of English, beginning with its roots in Indo-European to the early modern period. Each time period will be centered on one or more texts in order to help students situate the (socio)linguistic developments of the langauge. Familiarity with these texts is integral to performing well on the exam. Special focus will also be given to language contact between English and other languages to exemplify aspects of developments in the history of English.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
A basic understanding of phonology, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics is important for this course.
