The aim of this course is to introduce students to contemporary Irish society with focus on the issue of cultural diversity and themes of identity and citizenship in contemporary Ireland. Following an introduction to the social, historical and cultural background of Ireland and discussion of the themes central to the topic of cultural diversity in contemporary Ireland, Roddy Doyle's The Deportees and Other Short Stories (2007) will be closely analysed. At the end of the course, it is expected that students will have gained a deeper understanding of contemporary Ireland as a 'culturally diverse' society, will be able to critically analyse and discuss the issues of citizenship and identity within the social and cultural context of contemporary Ireland, and will have an appreciation for Roddy Doyle and his short fiction as representative of contemporary Irish literature.
Lehrmethodik
This course will be conducted through lectures, student presentations and plenary discussions.
Inhalt/e
Following an introduction to contemporary Irish society and its cultural diversity, the course will focus on the close analysis of the short stories collected in Roddy Doyle's The Deportees (2007). As background reading and preparation for class discussions, relevant secondary sources primarily on the themes of identity, citizenship and cultural diversity in contemporary Ireland will be provided by the lecturer via the Moodle course page.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
None. However, some background knowledge on (contemporary) Ireland and Irish culture would be appreciated.
