This seminar cultivates your interdisciplinary collaboration skills by integrating theoretical knowledge of wisdom research and game development with practical application. You will develop the ability to create video games designed to foster wisdom, while enhancing your capacity for critical reflection on interdisciplinary research. Through various teaching methodologies, you will gain a deep understanding of innovative approaches to applying research findings in game design.

The seminar utilises a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, peer workshops, group discussions, and hands-on activities. You will collaborate with other students from the Psychology programme and the master's programme Game Studies and Engineering. Through this interdisciplinary approach, you will apply your knowledge during a two-day game jam, focusing on designing video games that promote wisdom.

Engage in practical interdisciplinary work through participation in the FWF-funded research project GameWise: Fostering Wisdom through Video Games. Develop the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, apply developmental psychology concepts, gain insight into video game design, and, during the game jam, create a short video game designed to enhance wisdom.The course covers various topics including:Introduction to interdisciplinary research in psychology and game studiesWisdom researchVideo game developmentDevelopment and implementation of short video games during a game jamCritical reflection on research findings and game design

Workshop Organisation: All Game Studies and Engineering students in the seminar must organise a workshop on the basics of game development for all Psychology students in the seminar. The structure of this workshop and the distribution of tasks is discussed during an individual seminar session (Worth 30% of the final mark)Game Jam Prototyping: Participate in diverse a Game Jam team together with Game Studies and Engineering and Pyschology students. Design a game (or functional prototype) that is built on the idea of conveying wisdom through play (Worth 30% of the final mark)Term Paper: Write a term paper on a video game of your choice the fosters wisdom. (Worth 30% of the final mark)Participation: regularly attend the seminar and participate in homework exercises and seminar tasks. (Worth 10% of the final mark)Detailed instructions for each assignment are provided during the first seminar week.

All assignments must fulfil a minimum standard to be considered for a positive evaluation. They must……not be written by an AI or generative language tool.…display seminar-appropriate command of English.…contain formal features as defined by their assignment instructions.…reference all their sources correctly. Use the Chicago Manual of Style Author/Date format.I may reject a paper if these criteria are not met and demand a revision. Revised papers that fail to meet the minimum standard receive a 5/F (fail grade).Assignments fulfilling the minimum standard are graded according to the following criteria:Idea (connection to assignment, quality of main idea, reasonability…)Coherency (argumentation, logic, structure, transition between contents…)References (quality, quantity, application of sources considered, evidence…)Style (Correct usage of key terminology, fittingly abstract or concrete…)Expression (academic tone, grammar, syntax, spelling…)An assignment that is severely flawed in one or several of these areas receives a 5/F (fail grade). Attendance:Attendance during the first session is mandatory for seminar participation.You are allowed to miss three ninety-minute-sessions without giving any reasons.You are allowed to miss a fourth session if you provide a valid reason (e.g. a doctor’s appointment) and provide an extra assignment for the missed session.General remark on expulsion:Academic misconduct leads to expulsion from class.Missing more than four sessions may lead to expulsion from class. Severe violation of the university’s or the master programme’s Code of Conduct may lead to expulsion from class.
