At the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to:identify key events in the history of Malta;define (and exemplify) subject-specific terminology, especially as it relates to contact linguistics;examine Maltese social, historical, and cultural elements and explain their significance;describe and explain their process of learning about elements of Maltese sociolinguistics and culture as they relate to the excursion.attain a cursory understanding of the above as it relates to English as used in Sicily and in the larger Mediterranean area as a lingua franca.

Inhalt/e
In this course the following topics will be discussed:outline of Maltese history with a focus on its status as a British protectorate;introductions to Maltese English and Maltese:introduction to contact linguistics with a focus on Maltese English and Maltese;English as a lingua franca in the Mediterranean.This course provides an introduction to the linguistic landscape of Malta and the role of English in Malta as well as Sicily and the broader Mediterranean area. No previous knowledge of this topic is expected (but is considered a benefit). Students are expected to have a basic knowledge of linguistics (phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, sociolinguistics).

For the BA in Worlds of English, this course belongs to the Pflichtfächer in Fachliches Grundstudium Culture and requires students to have passed either British Culture: History andSociety or American Culture: History and Society.In exceptional circumstances, admission to the course may be granted at the discretion of the instructor even if the aforementioned prerequisite have not been met.
