Internet of Things (IoT) turned traditional buildings into entire ecosystems (Smart Buildings) with significantly improved efficiency. Smart Buildings increase people’s comfort and productivity, enable new opportunities, and stimulate the development of new services and businesses.Upon successful completion of this course, students willunderstand the concept of IoT and its applications in building automation;understand the main functionalities, key technologies, and future trends in Smart Buildings;learn methods and approaches to identify, characterize and solve problems and challenges related to home automation, buildings automation, and IoT systems design; obtain hands-on experience in the IoT domain, and acquire deep knowledge during project development.

The IoT and Smart Buildings is a project-based course! Therefore, the main objective is project development. The course is ideal for motivated students who want to acquire hands-on experience, try new software/hardware things, bring competencies to the next level, or test theoretical knowledge in practice. The topics for the Project can be related to IoT, Home Automation, Smart Homes, Smart Buildings, and even Machine Learning.ATTENTION! In summer semester 2024, the course will be done as a block course. In SS2024, a special focus will be given to the IoT solutions from company Espressif known for its hardware platform ESP32.The theoretical part of the course is versatile, and may include the following topics:Introduction to IoT and Smart BuildingsBuilding Management System (BMS)Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) SystemsIoT Communication ProtocolsInformation Technology in Building SystemsSensors and Actuators for Home AutomationCybersecurity, Privacy and Access ControlIoT Platforms and SystemsSmart Lighting and Occupancy TrackingMonitoring and Load ManagementBuilding Energy Modelling and Power EfficiencyReal-time PositioningFault Detection and DiagnosticsCloud Computing and Cloud Services
