Building models to describe, classify, assess, correlate, network, dynamize, simulate, predict and optimize spatio-temporal structures and proceses has been a very important method in geography since many decades. Especially in the modern field of GeoAI (Geospatial Artificial Intelligence) building models for learning, holding and retrieving the knowledge of AI-systems is essential. As the outcome of this course you will understand the basic concepts of geographical model building (especially using GI-Systems), of Geosimulation and of GeoAI. You will have insights into the traditional and current methods for it and you will have done experiments with them using cutting-edge software. You will have seen many best practice examples. You will have the assessment capability of the usefulness, meaningfulness, dangerousness and ethics of such models, their simulations and their use in GeoAI for geographical research and application.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
A blended learning approach will be used. There will be synchronous lectures on site or asynchronous online ones, which are open visible for everybody online via the virtual classroom software BigBlueButton. These lectures will be held primarily by the principal lecturer and by some external experts. Discussions are possible during and after the sessions. There will be exercises in class using the cutting-edge software (ArcGIS pro, Python Libraries, ChatGPT etc.) and assigments to do at home to get grading points. There will be discussions in class after reading of key texts or watching professional videos at home (flipped classroom). The students will do at least one presentation about their assignment results and there will be no test during the course but a final seminar paper of about 10 pages to elaborate. There will be the use of many other digital media, like e-questionaires, moodle tools, interactive web tools, special software etc.

The 12 sessions will be split into four blocks of three sessions each. The first block is the introduction into the concepts of modelling and geosimulation. There are lectures and flipped classrooms. The second block is the introduction into the practice of GIS-modeling using ArcGIS pro modeller etc.The third block is the introduction into GeoAI, getting to know best practice examples and discussions about them. The fourth block is the introduction in the practice of GeoAI using ArcGIS pro and other tools. All participants of the course should attend the first session on 05/10/2023, 8 to 9 on time in presence in the PC-room V.1.02 or virtual over BBB.All the materials and the content of the course will be posted in Moodle. All lectures will also be open visible for everybody online via the virtual classroom software BigBlueButton.
Erwartete Vorkenntnisse
Geographical basic knowledge, basic knowledge of GIS and interest in artificial intelligence and its applications in geography.ATTENTION, VERY IMPORTANT!It is recommended to attend the first sessions of the Course 320.743 (23W) Geographische Informationssysteme (B 4.3, B 3.6 alt) by Dr. Christian Kogler if you have not yet basic practice of the GIS-Software ARCGIS pro. You will learn there the basics, which are helpful in the Proseminar. This offer by Dr. Kogler helps in learning the software und you need not do any exams about it.
