What does it mean to be a parent? How do media and literature shape, challenge, and reflect cultural norms about parenthood? In this course, we will delve into the rich and complex portrayals of parenthood in British media and culture, exploring how this universal yet deeply personal experience has been framed, questioned, and reimagined over time. From traditional family structures to unconventional parenting models, from tales of sacrifice to stories of failure, parenthood offers a lens through which broader societal concerns — such as class, gender, race, and power — can be examined. In an era where family norms are constantly evolving, understanding these narratives also offers valuable insights into our collective cultural psyche.Key subtopics to be explored include (but are not limited to) traditional vs queer families, gendered expectations, economic struggles and privilege, trauma and abuse, parental absence, teenage rebellion and conflict, surrogacy and adoption, parenting in the digital age, etc.Students will have the opportunity to significantly shape the focus of the seminar according to their interests.
