This course provides an opportunity for students to practice and develop their academic writing skills in English in multiple genres. Some of the topics that will be covered are the structure, organization, and analysis of academic and professional texts and the issue of plagiarism.

Students will be instructed on various aspects of academic writing and conducting research by the instructors through lectures and PPTs that will be supplemented by Moodle activities. Self- and peer-reflection/assessment forms an integral aspect of how students are expected to improve their language competency in writing skills. Extensive in-class and at-home writing and reading are expected of students.Students are expected to avail themselves of (1) tutorial options provided by the SchreibCenter and the course tutor and (2) materials available on Moodle.

The topics in this course may include but are not limited to: conducting research and collating information;organizing writing and producing academic/professional texts; analyzing texts in terms of language (spec. lexis, grammar, and structure); using quotations appropriately;avoiding plagiarism;self- and peer-review/feedback; andconventions of academic style.Students will be asked to formulate their own opinions regarding texts covered in class in order to show evidence of critical thinking and expert processing of formal texts.

Generally speaking, students should be confident in writing coherent paragraphs; know how to write an essay; understand the basics of citing academic literature; andunderstand the basics of using a style guide (Chicago Manual of Style/CMOS).

In this course students will be assessed in the following ways:continuous assessment in the form of self-, peer-, and instructor-generated feedback;various academic and professional texts representing multiple genres; anda in-class written examination. Students will be expected to create texts using laptops provided in the language lab in order to facilitate observation by the course instructors using the language lab software. 

Advanced language competences related to writing (See CEFR for more specifics) including but not limited to an advanced lexical and syntactic range and rhetorical strategies relating to argumentation.

The grading for this course will be based on:several in-class writing assignments (including the timed diagnostic during the first class session) anda timed, in-class written examination.Students will be provided with a detailed rubric that lays out the assessment criteria for written assignments.  The use of generative AI is expressly forbidden in this course in all stages of the writing process. Should the use of AI be suspected, students may be asked to take part in an oral defense that will take the place of the written assignment. In clear cases of plagiarism and/or the use of generative AI, a failing grade is warranted. Further information about this is available on the course Moodle page.
