In class, we will consider and critically discuss the core literature that looks at the interconnectedness of language, culture and thought. We will explore the nature of meaning as mental representation, cultural habit and linguistic practice. We will also look at language with the aim of identifying emergent cultural conceptualizations and comparing distinctive worldviews through the analysis of different case studies.The topics of the course include the following:speaking as a culturally constructed actpoliteness and honorificscultural forms of narrationlinguistic relativitykinshipcolorspacetimequantitiesobjects and substancesgrammatical gendercultural models and metaphors
