Upon completing the course, students should…have knowledge of practice-oriented translation theories and relevant terminology;have a broad overview of the field of translation;be aware of what contributions this field makes, and has made, to society;be aware of what translation involves;be able to appreciate the challenges involved in professional translating;be empowered to make more informed decisions about whether or not to trust certain multilingual information;be more informed users of translation tools;be aware of cultural and ideological issues relating to translation.

Students will receive input on theory and best practices relating to (professional) translation. There will be class discussions, practical exercises, and further reading. Extensive practice is expected from students; examples and assignments will be made available in class and on Moodle. Students are expected to be very proactive in terms of engaging in the process of translation. 

This is a practice-oriented course supplemented by relevant translation theory. Students are expected to attend class having completed the required reading and (practice) translation assignments so that they can engage with their peers and the instructor in order to gain a better understanding of the topic.  Generally speaking, this class will consider general translation issues with reference to English as a source and/or target language. Students with little to no knowledge of German must discuss this with the course instructor after the first session.

Students are expected to prepare a presentation on a pre-assigned topic and lead a discussion on specific aspects of that topic. They are then expected to hand in a written assignment which should include an extended analysis/commentary of their topic, as well as examples from different professional fields complemented by their own examples and translations.Moreover, there will be regular graded homework assignments.A written final exam will take place at the end of term.

The final grade is made up of the following:- final examination - regular homework assignements - written assignment on individual, pre-assigned topic (see above) - presentation- attendance, participation, and preparation.Assignments and other homework is to be submitted on Moodle in a timely fashion. Failure to do so will result in failing grade. Plagiarism policy:Plagiarism refers to the use of intellectual material produced by another person without acknowledging its source. Plagiarism is a serious offence and students may receive an overall failing grade for this course if they submit plagiarised work (this includes the use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools).
