Upon completion of this seminar, students will be familiar with sport as an important social and cultural space in which language and discourse(s) play a major role. In addition, students will further deepen their knowledge of linguistic and discursive practices and their constitutive functions in the field of sport.
Lehrmethodik
- theoretical input and discussion of major sociolinguistic and applied linguistic research on the language and discourses of sport - critical reading and discussion of relevant literature- practical work with authentic data from e.g. women's football - short student presentations - reflection essay
Inhalt/e
Embedded in the fields of sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, the seminar will cover the following aspects:- communication in / of sport- text types / genres in sport (e.g. post-match interviews)- sport and the (new) media- sport and identity (social, national, ethnic, sexual, gendered etc.)- sport and the body - sport, commercialization and globalization- the language of professional and amateur sport - specific types of sport such as football
