The participants will be able to define the main tenets of Cultural Linguistics and the analytical tools developed within the framework. Using this knowledge, the participants will be able to identify cultural conceptualizations in a given culture, mainly in English-speaking contexts. They will then be able to interpret the underlying cultural values and beliefs attached to the language use of a community. The participants will further be able to examine and compare cultural conceptualizations across varieties of English. In this way, they will be able to assess the role of culture in language use in general.
Lehrmethodik
Introductory input on related theories and methods will be provided by the instructor regularly. The participants are expected to take part in discussions and group works that will be based on the reading assignments. Together with regular attendance, this will form 25% of the overall grade. Another 25% will be earned by holding an oral presentation. The Proseminar paper will then make up of the remaining 50%. A more detailed presentation of learning and assessment methods will be provided in the first session.
Inhalt/e
The course will begin with a general overview of how to define culture, including cultural beliefs and values, what constitutes a language, and how culture, customs, beliefs and values affect the use of language and how the use of language reveal cultural beliefs and values. These aspects will be evaluated within the framework of Cultural Linguistics. The majority of the course will focus on the main tenets of Cultural Linguistics and its study in relation to other fields of linguistics such as Corpus Linguistics, World Englishes, and Intercultural Communication.
