After successful completion of this introductory course, students will be able to understand various approaches to literature, identify and analyze different literary genres and periods, formulate an academic literary analysis and appreciate the academic study of Anglophone literatures. They will also become more familiar with exemplary texts and authors, both classics and beyond canon.

Over the course of the semester, students will be introduced to key terms and central approaches to the literary study of Anglophone texts. We will then take a close look at the three main literary genres (poetry, prose, and drama), with a special focus on poetry. In addition, we will explore different approaches and theories for literary analysis. Exemplary texts and other media (film, music) shall serve us for a better understanding and as practice of our analytical skills.Topics include: definitions of and approaches to (Anglophone) literature(s), literary theories, literary genres, literary analysis, socio-cultural perspectives

The final grade is an aggregate of continuous assessment throughout the semester, based on the following three pillars:Active participation (30%)Written assignments, including a short academic essay/ literary analysis (30%)Final, open-book exam (online, open questions) at the end of the semester (40%)Failing one pillar of assessment automatically leads to a fail grade for the entire course!
