Students will engage with a variety media involved in the transmission of folklore, from the traditionally oral, to animated cartoons, to modern forms (oral and social media).

Students will gain familiarity with some of the main pillars of “home-grown” American folklore, as well as others of European, African, and Native American origin. Issues treated include transmission, traditionally oral and today multimodal and often commercial, and the role of folklore in disseminating and/or perpetuating collective values and stereotypes.
