EcoMedia Literacy between Humanimal Studies and AI
Intended learning outcomes
In this course, participants will together develop a publishing proposal and sample units for a practical handbook for EcoMedia Literacy. It will use the workshop structure developed in the instructors' 2016 textbook EcoMedia Literacy (which was published only in Japanese) and incorporate topics brought into the classroom by the participants from their own experiences and interests. The proposal will be submitted to a big academic publisher who has already agreed to consider it. In case of publication, participants will be appropriately credited. In the process, participants will become familiar with: • Theory: important topics, themes (kewords) and examples of EcoMedia Literacy and neighboring fields (ecopedagogy, environmental communication, humanimal studies, media studies, posthumanist philosophy, bioethics). • Practice: how dialogic learning in an ecomedia literacy workshop works. Communally planning a book publishing project from concept and research to writing. Individually writing short academically sound texts for a general audience (e.g. glossary and/or introduction texts for workshops). • Awareness: what makes online environmental messages more or less effective, connecting one's own experience to the media and natural environments.
Lehrmethodik inkl. Einsatz von eLearning-Tools
Teaching Methods, incl. E-Learning Tools
We will use the "inside-out classroom for adult learning" method. There is little lecturing or other one-way communication in the classroom. Each meeting time is separated into 2 units during which we will tackle different aspects of the topic. There will always be a good mix of activities and a proper break between the units.- regular assignments (learning from texts and videos, participating in online forums on the Moodle platform, writing short texts, filling out worksheets, preparing presentations, brainstorming sheets, fieldwork etc.): these will posted by instructor on a regular basis, to be completed individually and each submitted by deadline on Moodle (Make sure to plan for about 2-3 hrs of prep time between the blocks that happen in the same week, about 4-6 hrs between other blocks!)- classroom time reserved for groupwork expanding and building on the perparatory work by participants- time and resources permitting, guest speakers will be invited who have experience with topics such as animal rights, over-tourism, climate change, environmental policies, AI. Possibly will arrange field trip.
