This course introduces students to the study of digital worlds and introduces important concepts around technology and society. We will explore different methodological engagements with digital data, processes of datafication and data-related practices; and we also reflect on how these methods co-construct our objects of research and ourselves as researchers.Introduction to concepts of social, cultural and technological research of the digital tranformationIntroduction to digital methods and toolsOpportunities and risks of new digital technologies, also artificial intelligence

Inhalt/e
The course will combine presentations by the lecturer, presentations by students and the reading and discussion of texts. In addition, in a 2-day-event in June, the course will make use of elements of two novel methods for studying digitalization and datafication within everyday life: Data walks and data sprints. In data walks participants experience data and data collection by walking together, often in a city or other data-rich environment. Data walking as an embodied, situated and generative practice is a novel method for studying datafication (van Es & de Lange 2020) and allows to sense, reflect and experiment with the situatedness of data, and to generate new angles for further exploration. No specific prior knowledge of particular methods is necessary. In data sprints participants work together in groups on one or more digital data sets, e.g. from social media. You will be given the opportunity to explore, analyze and, if necessary, code these data with the aim of jointly developing possible research questions. You will ‘sprint’ to achieve results with data within a relatively short time frame, focusing on the reflection of opportunities provided by methods and data (Kocksch et al. 2022). No specific prior knowledge of particular methods is necessary.
